Abstract:
The author attempts to classify the majority of stains found discolouring ageing paper and to give general mechanisms for the formation of the stains, concentrating on phenomena not previously described in the conservation literature. The following are considered: foxing; water stains; migration of acidic and other impurities; ink-produced images; discolouration produced by light; metal-induced discolouration; airburn; degradation of deposited volatile materials; induced oxidation: a new hypothesis to explain discolouration; the Turin shroud. Photographs, references.
