Abstract:
For restoration of historic paper damaged by book worms, it is preferable that the quality of paper used for repair be similar to that of the original. The purpose of this study was to attempt to make good quality paper for repairing historic paper objects. Gamma irradiation (60Co, 49-390 kGy) and/or thermal accelerated aging (80°C, 60% relative humidity) were used to simulate aging. Four kinds of washi (Japanese paper), i.e., kozo (thin and thick), mitsumata, and gampi paper, were used in this experiment. Discoloration of the paper after each single treatment was slight, while that after gamma irradiation followed by thermal aging treatment was pronounced. Folding endurance and tensile energy absorption (TEA) were extensively decreased by gamma irradiation. Data was also presented to show changes in physical properties after gamma irradiation followed by thermal treatment.
