Abstract:
In 1986 the records conservation division of the National Archives of Canada began an investigation into leaf-casting as a means of repairing some of the damaged collections in both the Natinal Archives and National Library holdings. As a preliminary step, a conservator from the National Archives spent three months training on the leaf-caster at the Canadian Conservation Institute in order to have a firm understanding of leaf-casting and its advantages and limitations. A survey of the collections was initiated to ascertain if indeed a leaf-casting operation was warranted. An evaluation of various machines on the market was undertaken and some consideration was given to having a machine custom-made. Finally, a leaf-caster was purchased as well as some auxiliary equipment to assist in its operation. The author elaborates on various aspects of this investigation and provides an overview of those leaf-casters which were considered for purchase.
