Abstract:
Dry methods of cleaning paper, including air cleaning, brushing and erasing, are first discussed. A range of solvents is suggested, with discussion of their use and of recent theories of solvent activity. Cleaning with water, soap, detergents and enzymes is discussed, with Warnings about safe handling of the object and about over-pressing. Finally, the various categories of bleaching are cited, including chloramine-T, hypochlorites, sodium-chlorine dioxide, and permanganate. The contradictory claims in the scientific literature for safety of various bleaches are cited, with a plea for a carefully planned testing program on the effects of bleaches on paper. -- AATA
