Abstract:
Reports results obtained in an experimental investigation into the extent of blistering and bleaching of selected old papers when treated in a number of different hydrogen peroxide baths, including pre-treatment with calcium hydroxide versus ammonia, pH 9 versus pH 10, 1% versus 2% H2O2 concentration, stabilized versus unstabilized bleaching solutions, and addition of ethanol. These variations in bleach bath composition and paper pre-treatments reduced the tendency to blister during bleaching, in some cases, but no test procedure eliminated the problem.
