Abstract
The trend towards a decrease in the emission of sulphur pollutants in industrialised countries has created a new multi-pollutant situation where SO2 is no longer the dominant pollutant. The decrease in sulphur pollutant has resulted in a substantial reduction in the corrosion rates of several materials. The corrosion rates in urban areas are, however, still higher than in surrounding rural areas. The impact of nitrogen pollutants (including nitric acid, ozone and particulate matter), most of which are produced by car traffic, has increased. The paper presents the MULTI-ASSESS project Model for multi-pollutant impact and assessment of threshold levels for cultural heritage. This project is expected to result in models quantifying the effects of pollutants on the corrosion and soiling of materials. It will be expected to serve as a basis for threshold levels to be included in EU directives on urban air quality for the protection of cultural heritage objects.
