Résumé
The site of Koutammakou, Togo, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2004. This living cultural landscape is inhabited by 30,000 Batammariba, a cultural group whose traditional settlements give the site its importance. Traditional settlements of 'takienta', one-story dwellings with built-in granaries, are interspersed between farmlands and sacred landscapes. Though the Togolese government acknowledges the tourist potential of Koutammakou, the site was inscribed on the basis of its cultural, social, historical, technical, aesthetic and ecological worth. It is therefore imperative that the site maintain its authenticity and integrity in the face of social change and external influences. The article outlines the process of its nomination onto the World Heritage List, the ratification of the World Heritage Convention by the Togolese State, conservation measures and management plans that are being implemented, as well as financial contributions from the Africa 2009 Programme and West African Museums Programme (WAMP).
